Improving antimicrobial stewardship—when it’s needed like never before.

It’s a growing health concern: People infected with antimicrobial-resistant organisms are more likely to be sick longer, have more expensive hospital stays and can be more likely to die as a result of an infection. And while the rate of antibiotic-resistant infections is on the rise, the number of new antimicrobial drugs approved in the United States continues to decrease. All of which makes antimicrobial stewardship (ASP), a set of coordinated strategies to improve the use of antimicrobial medications, so important.

This article describes how Detroit Medical Center enhanced its current ASP. Their goals were to provide better patient care and achieve cost and personnel time savings by implementing the TheraDoc® Clinical Decision Support Software. In addition, the authors highlight the benefits of the software program, such as identifying target areas for improvement as well as helping to identify patients most likely to benefit from intervention.

From manual to automated: improving how hospitals gather and share critical data.

Among the most costly medical errors are healthcare-associated infections (HAIs). It’s estimated that 1.7 million patients develop an HAI annually and 99,000 die as a result, adding $28–33 billion in healthcare costs. And nearly all HAIs are preventable. But the initiatives to help reduce them, including the manual collection, analysis, and reporting of hospital HAI data, are time consuming and fraught with the possibility of human error. On top of that, many medical centers do not have the resources for fulltime analytic support.

In this report, read how hospitals of all sizes address these barriers by turning to clinical decision support systems such as Premier’s TheraDoc® to auto¬mate surveillance, collection, and National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) reporting of critical infection data.

Working together was the key to successfully implementing the Theradoc® system.

Tampa General Hospital is one of the most comprehensive medical centers in West Central Florida. Like most healthcare facilities, they face ongoing patient-safety challenges such as reducing the spread of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) and other infectious diseases, as well as preventing adverse drug events and optimizing medication therapy. And, like most facilities, they face challenges with departmental collaboration and reducing the fragmentation of information.

But they knew that an electronic system would enable them to spend less time on data collection and analysis and more time on intervention, education, and prevention. Here’s their account of how the TheraDoc Clinical Surveillance Solution was implemented at their facility along with tips for other facilities on the brink of installing their own clinical decision support technology.
